green thinking outside the box

ESOS: Time is running out.

Cubic Apple have the solution.

Worrying statistics show just 120 businesses are ESOS compliant. In February it was reported that Half of the manufacturers in the UK don’t know about ESOS.

Now, with less than three months to go to the deadline, just a small percentage of the estimated 10,000-plus businesses that fall under the new energy efficiency scheme have met their legal requirements.

A recent report has raised major concerns regarding ESOS compliance deadlines. 88 firms must comply, every single day, in order to meet UK ESOS deadlines by
December 5th 2015.

60 per cent of companies have not set a budget to conduct their ESOS audits. Some may be waiting for their next financial year to release their auditing budgets. 53% of firms interviewed in EDIE’s recent energy survey said they would use in-house measurement and reporting to comply. Industry commentators suggest it takes three months to a year for in-house staff to learn how to carry out an audit.

Cubic Apple, believe they have the solution. Lee Clements, Cubic Apple’s Technical Sales Director explains why.

Cubic Apple have kept the same philosophy with all aspects of services we provide. That is, to simply the process and allow our clients to utilise their time more productively in respect to the main activity of their organisation. Using our Energy Performance Analysis eCount ecount edited software, we can speed up the process and eliminate time consuming tasks.

What is ESOS?

The Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory scheme for organisations in the UK that meet the qualification criteria. Organisations that qualify must carry out the ESOS assessments every four years. These assessments are audits of the energy used by their buildings, Industrial processes and transport to identify cost-effective energy saving measures. Building assessments can be made easily and efficiently using EPC eCount.

Who Qualifies for ESOS?

Any UK company that either:

  • Employs 250 or more people, or
  • Has an annual turnover in excess of 50 million euro (£38,937,777), and an annual balance sheet total in excess of 43 million euro (£33,486,489)
  • An overseas company with a UK registered establishment which has 250 or more UK employees (paying income tax in the UK)

What is Energy Performance Analysis eCount?

EPA eCount is a powerful assessment tool that can be used for an individual building assessment or for undertaking compliance audits across any number of buildings; it focusses on the energy reporting and analysis requirements of ESOS and follows the Good Practice Guidance for measuring energy consumption. eCount sits at the heart of the ESOS process by providing an energy software and quality assured system to sample correctly, analyse data adequately, target improvements, satisfy audit and provide invaluable information and reports.

So how does it work?

By utilising ‘Data Capture Sheets’ our Lead assessors can input this information into the eCount software and produce Energy Performance Analysis as a report or in a spreadsheet format. This information can be integrated to a variety of attributes such as building type, location, benchmarks etc. EPA eCount will easily identify poor performing buildings which have good prospects for improvement as well key information on high performing buildings and how they achieve excellence.

Energy Performance Analysis can categorise and report on the following areas;

Mean Carbon Rating, Number of Buildings and annual savings, Total CO2 emissions, total energy use, Total energy costs, Building breakdown in energy bands, Breakdown by customer regions, Breakdown by facility managers, Breakdown by building archetype, Breakdown by UK climate region, Breakdown by internal environment, Breakdown by HVAC system, Breakdown by town, Breakdown by LZC and Breakdown by main benchmark category.

The EPA eCount standard is the way to become ESOS smart with respect to buildings; it is flexible, powerful, reliable informative, compliant and can be used to support ESOS, Corporate Social Responsibility Strategies and help engage staff in saving energy. It is reasonably priced and capitalises on existing well tried and tested DEC Conventions and engages our qualified assessors in the delivering the ESOS requirements for qualifying customers.
